BIO

Trent Winkel has the mind of an engineer and the compassion of a healer, an ideal combination for an orthopaedic joint specialist. A natural problem solver drawn to hands-on work, he started his college journey as an engineering student. However, early into his studies, he recognized he wasn’t passionate about engineering — he was passionate about caring for others.

At the age of 22, he took an entry-level healthcare job to explore medicine as a career path and had the opportunity to scrub in on a hip replacement surgery. Holding the retractor for a surgeon ignited a passion for orthopaedic surgery and sent him down a path to medical school, orthopedic residency and fellowship training in knee and hip reconstruction. His advanced training included complex primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty, computer-assisted surgery, anterior approach total hip replacement and robotic joint replacement.

At Great Basin Orthopaedics, Dr. Winkel specializes in joint replacement and orthopaedic trauma, disciplines where he has the daily opportunity to problem-solve for his patients to improve their lives. Surgery can be a serious decision and Dr. Winkel’s goal is to lay out the treatment options for his patients so they can decide together how to proceed with care. He works to forge connections in the clinic room, so patients feel understood and can actively collaborate in their care..

A fourth-generation Nevadan, Dr. Winkel knows and loves his hometown. He is grateful for the opportunity to return as a skilled surgeon to care for his community, along with his wife, Sarah, another Reno native and area pediatrician. He grew up enjoying the Sierras, mountain biking, hiking, skiing and riding dirt bikes and is happy to be reconnecting with those interests since returning.
