Christopher Dolan realized the importance of pursuing one’s dreams early on. Throughout his school years in Reno, Nevada, Dr. Dolan committed himself to his education and athletics at Wooster High School. This path would eventually lead him to the University of California Davis where he earned bachelor degrees in Physiology and History, and later an MD at the university’s School of Medicine. Today, as a board certified orthopedic surgeon with a completed fellowship in sports medicine, Dr. Dolan has perhaps found the perfect marriage of his passions.
Dr. Dolan was drawn to orthopedics because it was challenging, but rewarding, much like the sports he loved. Throughout his youth, sports were always part of the picture. He was a tri-sport athlete in high school, playing baseball, football and basketball for the Wooster Colts. His years on the field and the court helped develop an appreciation for both the physical demands put on an athlete’s body and the hard work needed for success. These values helped guide him to a sports medicine specialty.
After medical school, and a residency in orthopaedic surgery at the Grand Rapids Orthopaedic Residency Program at Michigan State University, Dr. Dolan returned west to Stanford University for a Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy Fellowship. The prestigious program included serving as team physician for the San Francisco 49ers and provided him with specialized training in hip arthroscopy. To date, Dr. Dolan is Reno's only Board Certified Orthopaedic Surgeon with fellowship training in this specialty.
While at Stanford, Dr. Dolan also served as Clinical Instructor for medical students and residents and as the team physician for Stanford Athletics and the university’s international Olympic athletes.
It is not surprising that Dr. Dolan returned to his beloved hometown to establish his practice. He has special interest in the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of sports related injuries, and arthroscopy of the hip, knee, shoulder, elbow and ankle – skills he enjoys putting to use on northern Nevada athletes. Along with other members of Great Basin Orthopaedics, he is part of the University of Nevada Reno Wolf Pack Orthopaedic Consultancy team; serves on the Justin Sportsmedicine Team, providing medical care for pro rodeo athletes; and is an orthopaedic consultant for the Western Nevada College Wildcats Baseball team, as well as Wooster High School and Galena High School athletes. Dr. Dolan also serves on the Renown Trauma Panel, treating traumatic injuries and complex fractures.
Patient education is essential to Dr. Dolan’s practice and he believes in evidence based medicine and a multidisciplinary approach to the prevention, treatment, and recovery of each patient. His goal is to individualize care and work towards a shared goal with his patients to maintain an active, productive, and enjoyable lifestyle. He also believes in the importance of nutrition and a healthy active lifestyle. He and his family follow a Paleo and whole food lifestyle.
With grandparents from Battle Mountain and Winnemucca, and parents who attended UNR, Dr. Dolan is proud of his deep Nevada roots. He and his wife enjoy Reno’s small town atmosphere and feel it is a wonderful place to raise their three children. When he’s not in the operating room or clinic, you’ll find Dr. Dolan on the soccer fields, baseball diamonds and ski slopes of northern Nevada with his family.
