Michael Lilyquist Joins Great Basin Orthopaedics

Dr. Michael Lilyquist has joined the team of highly skilled and accomplished orthopaedic specialists at Great Basin Orthopaedics (GBO), one of Reno’s top practices dedicated to bone and joint care.

Dr. Lilyquist joins the Reno community and the Great Basin Orthopaedics team after completing his fellowship training in hand and upper extremity surgery at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He is looking forward to bringing his family back out to the West. “My wife and I grew up enjoying the mountains and the recreational opportunities they have to offer. It has always been a priority for us to get our four young children back to that type of lifestyle,” he says. “To land in Reno, the mecca of the outdoors, is a dream come true for us. We plan to grow deep roots here and fully enjoy everything this beautiful part of the country has to offer.”

While he is qualified to treat all areas of the body, Dr. Lilyquist is especially interested in the hand and upper extremities – from the shoulder to the fingertips. He says he’s fascinated by the anatomy but also understands how important this area of the body is to quality of life. “It’s easy to take our hands or arms for granted, but they’re critical to just about everything we do,” he says. “It’s very rewarding for me to be able to give my patients back functionality and reduce pain,”

A Salt Lake City native, Dr. Lilyquist completed medical school at the University of Utah and a five-year orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where he served as Chief Resident; Orthopedic House Staff Counsel Representative; while also being awarded Emergency Room Consultant of the Year and being selected to join the AOA Emerging Leaders program. His training in Kansas City included nine months of pediatric orthopaedics at Children’s Mercy Hospital, where he served as Chief Orthopaedic Resident. He then completed his hand and upper extremity fellowship at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo.

Dr. Lilyquist is one of a limited number of surgeons in the nation specializing in total elbow replacements. He practices with the most current techniques in total shoulder replacements, and has specialized training in reverse total shoulder and resurfacing total shoulder replacement surgeries. He offers minimally invasive endoscopic carpal tunnel release, nonsurgical treatment of Dupuytren’s contracture with Xiaflex injections and “wide-awake” surgeries of the hand. Additionally, Dr. Lilyquist offers fracture treatment and management in both the adult and pediatric population.

His commitment to community hasn’t waivered since his Eagle Scout days. At different times in his life, he has volunteered his services for ski patrol, instructor of advanced wilderness medicine, outdoor emergency care, and using his fluency in Spanish to act as an interpreter at various medical facilities.  Most recently, he served two medical missions as a volunteer pediatric orthopaedic surgeon with the non-profit organization, Project Perfect World, in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Once settled in Reno, he and is family look forward to getting involved in the local community.
